Updated: Dec 16, 2024

“Surrounded by air”, A Military location in Greece

Inspired by Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Team: Solo Project

Time: 7 Days

Tool: Unreal Engine 5, Sketchup

Key Goals

  • Create an engaging location in Unreal that is set in the world of Assassin's Creed Odyssey

  • A written Level Design document that showcases my level design process

Key Features

Stealth-focused level, Open world, Explore the Level, Different Altitudes, and Mission Challenge.

Overview

If I create a location in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, what will it be like?

In crafting a unique gameplay experience for Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the focus is on a fort located on a mountain peak, incorporating the game's core mechanics: Stealth, Assassination, and Freerun. The design aims to immerse players in a dynamic and challenging environment with non-linear entry options and varied terrain heights.

Location and Structure

The fort is situated on top of a mountain, offering stunning views and challenging gameplay. Players can choose to enter through the main entrance or climb the cliffs, ensuring multiple entry points for a diverse experience. The fort features three different terrain heights, allowing players to use towers and walls to sneak into the middle part of the map.

Challenging Gameplay Element

The innermost, third level of the fort presents the pinnacle of the challenge. Here, players face heightened difficulty due to limited higher cover around two large buildings and a high concentration of enemy soldiers. Experienced players can leverage the height of the buildings and the terrain to strategically eliminate enemies despite the challenging setup.

Mission Design:

The level incorporates four primary missions strategically spread across the terrain:

Kill Polemarch (0/1):

Kill Captain (0/3):

Burn War Supplies (0/3):

Loot Treasure (0/5):

These mission objectives provide diverse challenges and encourage players to explore different sections of the level, contributing to a rich and engaging gaming experience. The estimated completion time for the level is approximately 20 minutes.

Conclusion

The envisioned level combines Assassin's Creed Odyssey's military setting with thoughtful level design. The mountainous location, non-linear entry options, varied terrain heights, and challenging missions contribute to an engaging and immersive gameplay experience.

Ensure the fort and surroundings are historically and culturally consistent with Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

Challenges

Designing the number of enemies and their movement routes is crucial to ensure players do not encounter too many enemies at once. Players should have opportunities to avoid enemies to complete the missions. Unfortunately, this level cannot be tested at the moment and relies on gameplay experience and feedback from other players. With more time and testing, adjustments can be made to refine the level.

Theme/Environment

I designed the scene at the top or the mountainside because when the player reaches the top of the mountain, the player can also enjoy the view of Greece. This can also bring some visual enjoyment to the players.

3. Theoretical play process

Steps:

  1. Steps for Completing the Missions Point A: Kill nearby enemies and the captain if possible.

  2. Third-floor Tower: Steal the treasure chest and set a trap to prevent enemy detection and call for backup. Use the rope to get to point B and assassinate the captain, then head south.

  3. Point C: Kill enemies near point three, then hide in the grass and ambush passing enemies.

  4. Near the House: Kill the enemies including a captain, loot the treasure chest, and go back to point D on the wall, killing enemies on the way.

  5. North Area: Use buildings and grass to steal the treasure chest first, then burn the war supplies at points E and F.

  6. Point G: If the captain was not killed earlier, try to kill him now, loot the treasure chest, and then go to point H to loot the national treasures.

  7. Final Steps: Assassinate the Polemarch and hide in the nearby grass. Burn the last war supply, complete the objectives, and escape.
